Begginning
Finca Primera began in 2020 as an experiment. Fran’s family has a vineyard in Barrancas with old pergolas from the 1950s. Interestingly, these are co-planted with different varieties in the same plot, so it was decided to harvest them together and co-ferment the different varieties. “If they are planted that way, there must be a reason.”
Thus, the first harvest of Finca Primera Malbec – Rosé Muscat and the Orange Torrontes – Ugni Blanc was carried out. Later, we continued with a Sangiovese – Ancellotta.
Vineyard
The vineyard is located in the southeast part of Barrancas. Barrancas is one of the first areas planted with vines in Mendoza, named so because of the cliffs of the Mendoza River. This makes the soils in the area highly influenced by the river, leaving the northern side of the river with sand and pebbles and the southern side, where this vineyard is located, with soil containing finer material and the presence of pebbles.
The finer material (clay and silt) retains more moisture in the soil, creating cooler soils and microclimates, ideal for preserving acidity and balance in this fairly warm area.
